Residents of Vijayawada and a few other surrounding areas were caught off guard on Sunday (May 4, 2025) by an unexpected shower accompanied by strong winds.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a warning for severe thunderstorms in Krishna district, including Vijayawada, indicating that severe thunderstorms with lightning, surface winds and heavy rainfall were very likely to occur at a few places over the region. As the day progresses, the weather is expected to improve, with conditions becoming partly sunny.
In its April 30 release, the IMD had predicted above-normal maximum and minimum temperatures and normal to above-normal rainfall for Andhra Pradesh for May, in the Monthly Temperature and Rainfall Outlook for the country.
“The IMD, Amaravati, meanwhile, gave a forecast of thunderstorm, accompanied with lightning and gusty winds, at isolated places across the three regions of North Coastal Andhra Pradesh, South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema until May 7 and said that there will not be any major change in maximum and minimum temperatures. The temperatures are expected to rise after May 8 in the State,” it said.
