The Tamil Nadu government will take steps to explore the possibility of getting a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for a tamarind variety from Pennagaram in Dharmapuri district, Minister T.M. Anbarasan said in the Assembly on Tuesday (April 22, 2025).
Listing the requirements for obtaining a GI tag for a product, the Minister said Tamil Nadu ranked second among the States, with 69 GI tags.
The Minister was responding to a query by Pattali Makkal Katchi’s G.K. Mani (Pennagaram) during the Question Hour.
Mr. Anbarasan also recalled an announcement made by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin last week, increasing the subsidy provided for applying for GI tags, from ₹25,000 to ₹1 lakh.
