Three persons were arrested by the Forest Department for chopping one tonne of bamboo in Reserve Forest (RF) at Melarasanpattu village near Odugathur town in Vellore along Jawadhu Hills on Tuesday.
Forest officials said the arrested persons were identified as K.Chakravarthy (67), B. Ravi (52) and C. Santhosh Kumar (36). They are residents in Vellore. They are wood cutters.
Initial inquiry revealed that as part of routine patrol of RF in Odugathur forest range along the hills, a forest team led by forest range officer G. Venketachalam was patrolling in the area when they heard of a woodcutting noise inside the RF.
Immediately, they searched the thick forest area by foot after halting their patrol jeep on the outskirts of the RF. The team noticed a trio busy cutting bamboo trees into wooden logs with machines. As the gang saw the forest team, the gang tried to escape from the spot.
However, the forest team rounded the gang. The team seized wood cutting machines, chopped wooden logs, and a hand-held saw cutting machine. The trio were arrested under Indian Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 for trespassing and theft of forest properties. A probe is underway.
