The Bagayam police on Saturday arrested two persons for assaulting a traffic sub-inspector for stopping them from abusing bus crew.
The police said the arrested persons — V. Manikandan, 25, and B. Rajesh, 27 — were residents of Otteri near Palamathi Hills on the outskirts of Vellore town.
Inquiry revealed that they were coming from the hills on a two-wheeler when a car hit their vehicle and sped away. The duo chased the car. However, they missed it after a private bus tried to take a ‘U-turn’ near Thorapadi in Vellore town. They got into the bus and abused the bus crew for blocking their way.
The traffic sub-inspector, S. Velmurugan, who was regulating traffic on the route, intervened and tried to pacify the duo. An argument ensued, in which the duo assaulted him.
Immediately, a few commuters alerted the police about the incident. The police rushed to the spot and arrested them. Later, they were lodged at the Central Prison in Vellore. A probe is under way.
