The Vigilance and Anti Corruption Bureau (VACB) on Tuesday arrested a former sub-inspector of Fisheries department who failed to comply with a court order to serve her sentence in a 2009 embezzlement case.
The accused, S. Anitha, was convicted for misappropriating ₹68,555 from a bank in Ancuthengu, which offers financial assistance to women engaged in fisheries, during the 1997-1998 period.
The case, which was filed by the Thiruvananthapuram Vigilance Unit, resulted in Anitha receiving a sentence of four years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹70,000. However, she appealed the verdict in the Kerala High Court, which reduced her sentence to two years of rigorous imprisonment and upheld the fine.
Despite the sentence, the convict failed to appear in the Vigilance Court to serve her punishment. As a result, the Vigilance Court issued an arrest warrant. She has been arrested and produced before the court. Anitha is currently lodged at the Attakulangara Women’s Prison.
