In a digital arrest case, cyber criminals made an abortive attempt to dupe a Karimnagar-based singer cum event organiser Ch. Srikanth on Sunday.
According to sources, the fraudsters allegedly made a video call on WhatsApp to Srikanth posing as Mumbai-based law enforcement officials and threatened him with digital arrest.
The accused made a vain bid to make him believe that an arrest warrant was issued against him under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. Initially scared, he grew suspicious when they asked him to transfer ₹3 lakh on the pretext of ensuring some relief from the ‘impending digital arrest’.
He soon realised their trickery and escaped from falling prey to their nefarious designs, sources added.
Meanwhile, Srikanth, in a social media post, explained his ordeal at the hands of the cyber fraudsters and urged people to remain vigilant against such scams.
