31 per cent above-average rainfall has been recorded between May 1 to May 28 in the country, India Meteorological Department said. Meanwhile, the weather office has forecasted extremely heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds across different parts of northeastern regions like Assam, Mizoram, and Tripura.
Pm Modi’s visit to Sikkim
Due to adverse weather conditions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s trip to Sikkiam got cancelled. He addresses the people through video conference, and said “I also wanted to be a part of this celebration with you. I left Delhi early in the morning and reached Bagdogra, but the weather prevented me from going further… But such a magnificent scene is in front of me, where people are everywhere… I apologise to all of you. But as the Chief Minister has invited me, I assure you that whenever the state government decides, I will come to Sikkim and attend the celebrations of Sikkim completing 50 years of statehood…”
Telangana weather update
IMD issued an orange alert for parts of Telangana. A very heavy to heavy rainfall is expected from today, May 28, to May 29.
Mumbai weather news
The weather office issued a yellow alert for Maharashtra. According to IMD, light to moderate rain is expected from May 29 to May 31.
IMD forecast for Delhi
The weather department issued yellow and orange alerts for the capital. Rains with thunderstorms and gusty winds are expected in Delhi on Friday, May 30.
Northeast regions weather
Various state governments have asked the district administrations and all concerned to take precautionary measures to deal with the situation.
An IMD official said that a well marked low pressure area over Northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha coast persists over the same region at 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday.
Associated cyclonic circulation extends upto 7.6 km above mean sea level tilting southwards with height, he said, adding that it is likely to move slowly northwards and concentrate into a depression over the north Bay of Bengal during next 24 hours.
Under its influence, heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy rainfall and squally/gusty winds is very likely to occur over some parts of the northeastern region.
In Mizoram, the state’s disaster management and rehabilitation department urged the people to remain alert and contact the emergency operation centres in their respective deputy commissioner offices, district emergency operation centres, or the State Emergency Operation Centre if required.
More than 30 people were killed in the Aizawl region and other parts of the state in landslides triggered by heavy rain in May last year.
In Tripura, the Revenue Department in a high priority message asked all the eight district magistrate and collector to take all precautionary steps to prevent loss of life and damage to the properties in view of the possible heavy rains.
