Indian stock exchanges BSE, NSE, and MCX will remain shut on Thursday, May 1, 2025, in observance of Maharashtra Day, a state holiday marking the formation of Maharashtra. With exchanges headquartered in Mumbai, there will be no trading activity across equity, commodity, or currency markets.
All segments to remain closed
As per official stock exchange circulars, all segments including equity derivatives, SLB (Securities Lending and Borrowing), currency derivatives, and commodity derivatives will be non-operational on Thursday. The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will also remain shut for the full day. In addition, no transactions in India’s currency markets such as the Indian rupee will be conducted. Investors and traders should note that the suspension will apply across normal and extended trading hours.
Trading will resume across all platforms on Friday, May 2, 2025, during regular market hours.
For the uninitiated, Indian stock markets operate Monday to Friday. A typical trading day includes a pre-opening session from 9:00 AM to 9:07 AM, followed by continuous trading between 9:15 AM and 3:30 PM. The post-close session runs from 3:30 PM to 3:40 PM to determine final closing prices. Markets remain closed on weekends and designated public holidays.
What is Maharashtra Day?
Maharashtra Day is celebrated annually on May 1 to commemorate the creation of the state under the Bombay Reorganisation Act of 1960. The Act led to the bifurcation of the erstwhile Bombay State into Maharashtra and Gujarat, based on linguistic lines. It’s a significant day in the state’s political and cultural calendar.
Next market holidays in 2025
After May 1, the next stock market holiday will be on Independence Day, August 15. Other holidays include Ganesh Chaturthi (August 27), Gandhi Jayanti and Dussehra (October 2), Diwali (October 21 and 22), Guru Nanak Jayanti (November 5), and Christmas (December 25).
Traders are advised to plan their positions accordingly and stay updated on market holidays to avoid settlement issues or execution delays.
