Former gram panchayat president stabbed to death in Dharwad district

A former gram panchayat president, who was out on bail in connection with a murder case, was stabbed to death outside his residence in Kotur village of Dharwad taluk in Karnataka, on April 29.

The deceased — Shankarayya Panchayya Mathapati — had been arrested in connection with the murder of BJP Yuva Morcha vice-president Praveen Kammar. He secured bail a few months ago.

On April 29, he had appeared in court for a hearing. Later, he was sitting outside his residence when two men on a motorcycle arrived and stabbed him multiple times with a knife. The victim was taken to a hospital but passed away on the way.

The murder was captured on CCTV camera. Preliminary investigation indicates murder for vengeance, sources in the police said.

The family members of Mathapati have accused Deepak Kammar, brother of Praveen Kammar, and his aide Nagu of being involved in the murder.

Garag police have registered a case and are searching for the accused persons.
