Two men from Maharashtra were arrested at the Secunderabad Railway Station while transporting the contraband from Visakhapatnam to Manmad during a joint operation carried out by the Government Railway Police (GRP) Secunderabad, the Telangana Anti-Narcotics Bureau (TGANB), and the Railway Protection Force (RPF).
A total of 18.87 kg of ganja worth ₹9.43 lakh was seized from them.
The accused were identified as Mubeen Ahmed Raheem Khan, 51, a native of Yevla, Nashik, and Nafees Afsar Khan Pathan, 32, from Nandgaon, Manmad. A third accused, identified as Atiq, also from Maharashtra, and the mastermind behind the smuggling network, is absconding.
According to officials, Mubeen and Nafees worked as saree handwork designers who regularly travel across major cities like Pune, Mumbai, Chennai and Visakhapatnam for business. Mubeen was previously offered ₹5,000 by Atiq to smuggle ganja from Visakhapatnam to Manmad by train. Having successfully completed two such trips earlier, Mubeen agreed once again and decided to involve his friend Nafees for assistance, offering him ₹2,000 for the job. The duo travelled to Visakhapatnam on April 28, where an unidentified man, reportedly connected to Atiq, handed them a trolley suitcase containing nine packets of ganja. The man concealed his identity by wearing a mask and left without revealing any details.
Later that night, the two boarded the Nagawali Express with general tickets, intending to transport the contraband to Manmad. However, due to intensified police checks at Kazipet railway station, they disembarked and evaded the authorities. From there, they travelled to Hyderabad by bus and reached Secunderabad Railway Station on April 29, only to discover that the train to Manmad had already left.
While preparing to travel to Charlapally to board the next available train, they were intercepted by patrolling officers near the waiting hall. Upon interrogation, the duo admitted to carrying ganja in their trolley suitcase.
A case was booked and investigation is underway.
